Multiple exposure

Making-of Flames of Love

Our source of inspriration for this photo series was the photo series Love Letters by Jiang Zhi that was displayed in Shanghai in 2012. The idea is to capture the transformation of the flowers engulfed by flames and the beauty therein. To quote Jiang Zhi:
"Beautiful things and objects themselves will ultimately disappear, but the beauty itself will live on, as well as love. Perhaps this is what I am trying to express."
Inspired by this quote our interpretation is to capture the beauty of an object you have to view it from many angles.

To put emphasis on beauty we used the rose, the symbol of love. The blue flame was achived by soaking the rose in ethanol.
We put the rose in a glas on a table infront of a black background.

Then we made sure there's no light coming in from oudside.

In total darkness we started the long term exposure and lighted the rose. Then we flashed, turned the rose 90°, flashed again and so forth until the rose turned 360°.
